Trucker’s Form 2290 – Heavy Vehicle Use Tax

Trucker’s Form 2290 – Heavy Vehicle Use Tax

As an Independent Owner-Operator you are responsible to file Form 2290 – Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax by August 31st each year.

This is the tax that tends to “sneak up” on truckers and many fail to file their return. The IRS no longer sends any type of notification to alert you to file the return; which has caused many to be charged with late filing penalties.

As a truck owner, you are responsible to file Form 2290 – Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax for each truck you own that has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.

The IRS is requesting that you file your return electronically, using an approved e-file company.

Filing electronically will allow you to receive your IRS stamped receipt almost immediately. You’ll need your receipt to apply for your IRP tag on renewal. This form of filing will also put you on the e-file provider’s email list and you’ll get a notification next year to file your return; which will save you late filing fees.

If you prefer, you can continue to file paper returns. The IRS provides an updated Form 2290 each year on their website. Forms are no longer mailed to taxpayers.

Whether you choose to file electronically or by paper, mark your calendar to file no later than August 31st.
